Metadata fields are important for storing extra information in Subscript, either for transactions or customers. These fields can be used:

Creating a metadata field and updating it manually

If you want to create a new metadata field that you’ll keep updated manually, follow the steps below:

  1. In the object you want to add this field (customer or transaction), click the + button in the Metadata left pane

  1. Enter the field name > click Create

  1. Enter the value you want for it > click Create
  2. Click Yes, Create
  3. Click Save & Close in the customer or transaction

After you created the field, it will be available for your other customers or transactions for you to add values. The field itself needs to be created only once, but the values need to be updated — either one by one, manually, or in bulk by following the instructions in the next section of this article. They can also be left blank, if they’re not applicable for other customers or transactions.

Updating metadata fields in bulk

<aside> 👀 Please check out Import customers and transactions in bulk via CSV upload if you need to import customers and transactions. This article is assuming you already have customers and/or transactions in Subscript and just need to add metadata in bulk.

First, you’ll want to download either the customer list or transaction list from Subscript. In this example, I will use the customer list, but the exercise and steps are the same for transactions.

There’s no sound 🙂
